The company We’re in a Pickle was born out of a passion to share the unforgettable flavor of these awesome pickles with extended family and friends.
We’re in a Pickle, the financial situation that Judy and Brett were in at the time, became the chosen company name. Fifteen years ago, newlywed Brett Mullen had been downsized out of a job. With the couple in a financial jam and looking to generate income, the newlyweds opened a catering business. To make their mark in the catering world, the couple used family recipes that had been around for generations. One of the recipes happened to be for a pickle whose flavor was a cross between a dill and a gherkin, “sweet meets sour.” As a way for the guests at the catered events to remember them, Judy and Brett began giving away cute containers of pickles. They also gave them to friends, neighbors, teachers and acquaintances. The pickle became so much in demand, a company was created.
Their middle school daughter Morgan has become the pickle tasting expert. As the cannery was working on duplicating the taste and providing a shelf-stable product, she was the one to say “ok they’ve got it.” Morgan can also take credit for naming the chillin’ pickle shown in the company logo, shown loungin’ on a beach chair with a straw hat and sunglasses. She called him Mortimer.
The pickle business is their true passion and hope that you too will find that one taste of the “Decadent Dill” and you’re hooked. As Judy says, “the best thing to watch is someone’s face when they eat them.” There is no doubt that the flavor sells itself.
The Mullen’s dream has become reality as they build a business that reflects their commitment to quality, service and great taste.
Judy spent years asking a variety of people if they would help her with her pickles and getting them out to the public. Their “mom and pop” budget kept initial plans at a minimum. Thanks to the services of Jean Back and Debora Bridges of Survival Essentials, the Mullens were able to move their pickle operations out of their home and into a licensed cannery, creating everything for We’re in a Pickle from the ground up.
